捕える

とらえる【捕える】

1 〔つかまえる〕 catch; capture; corral; (獲物を) bag; 〔引っつかむ〕 seize; take [catch, get] hold of…; set one's hand on…; pounce on…; grasp.

●珍しいチョウを捕える catch a rare butterfly

・なわのはしを捕える grab [catch hold of] the end of a rope

・えり首[そで, 手]を捕える seize [take hold of] sb by the neck [sleeve, hand]

・そでをとらえようとする snatch [grab] at sb's sleeve

・機会を捕える seize (on) an opportunity

・その一瞬をとらえてシャッターをきる capture a moment with a click of the shutter

・宇宙からの電波を捕える catch [pick up] radio waves coming from space

・レーダーが敵機を捕える radar picks up an enemy plane

・肉眼で捕える catch [pick out] with the naked eye.

●相手の一瞬の隙をとらえて反撃に転じた. I seized a momentary lapse on the part of the opponent and shifted into a counterattack.

・カメラが貴重な映像をとらえた. The camera captured a valuable image [picture].

2 〔捕虜にする〕 capture; seize.

●敵にとらえられる be taken prisoner [captive]; fall into the enemy's hands alive

・敵兵 50 名を捕える take fifty prisoners.

3 〔捕縛する〕 arrest; round up…; apprehend; 《俗》 nab; cop; collar.

●賊を捕える arrest [catch, capture] a thief

・犯人を捕える capture an offender [the culprit]

・追いつめて捕える hunt down 《a criminal》.

●犯人はまだとらえられていない. The culprit is still at large.

4 〔把握する〕 grasp; see.

●文章の要旨を捕える grasp the main gist of a passage

・事態を客観的に捕える see a situation objectively

・物事を巨視的に捕える view things macroscopically

・(印象などが)とらえがたい fugitive; subtle; elusive; elusory; slippery; impalpable; intangible

・真相を捕える reach [arrive at, 《英》 come at] the truth of…

・実態を捕える reach [arrive at, 《英》 come at] the way sth really is [the actual state of sth]

・問題の本質を捕える understand [grasp] the essence of a problem

●〔似顔絵などが〕 彼女の特徴をよくとらえている. It captures her distinctive features very well.

5 〔引きつける〕 captivate; make a strong impression 《on…》; move.

●心を捕える captivate [move] one's heart

・恐怖にとらえられる be seized with [gripped by] panic [terror].

●彼は彼女の美しさにとらえられた. He was captivated by her beauty.

・彼女の美しさが彼の心をとらえて放さなかった. Her beauty captivated him and held him spellbound.
